About Clovis

The City of Clovis was named after Clovis M. Cole, a man who spent almost all his life in the vicinity. He was one of the two farmers who sold a part of his land for a right-of-way to the San Joaquin Valley Railroad (SJVRR) during the 1890s. Once a train station was built on the track’s west side, it was named after Cole’s first name.

Founded in 1891, and incorporated in 1912, the area which is known as Clovis today was widely popular for its thousands of acres of wheat. The city has a total area of 23.28 square miles (60.29 km2), all of it land.

Clovis is a mid-sized city in Fresno County, California with a population of about 118,000 people. It is located in the northeast quadrant of the Fresno-Clovis Metropolitan area.

The city is nestled in the midst of the agriculturally rich San Joaquin Valley. Clovis has been known as the “Gateway to the Sierra.” It sits at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. It is also close to Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Park.

The museum was founded by Dan Rouit. He was a flat track racer in his youth. However, he was confined to a wheelchair after being paralyzed in a freak climbing accident.

He and his wife, Kathy, gathered together an excellent collection of racing memorabilia for the public to enjoy. The museum offers free admission and is open by appointment only.

A visit to the museum will take you through the history of motorcycle racing in the U.S.  You’ll find more than 90 flat-track motorcycles on display. There are also period memorabilia including posters, leathers, helmets, and photographs.

 

Clovis Botanical Garden 

The Clovis Botanical Garden is a three-acre water-wise demonstration garden. It is made up of beautiful plants and landscapes appropriate for the hot summers and cool winters of California’s Central Valley.
